High performance direct drive generative wheel motor (gearless - brushless).

Equipped with a magnetic field drive technology, the external magnets (wheel) turn whereas the stator is not moving.  Therefore no friction inside the motor and thus no wear.

Using a microprocessor, the motor is measuring your thrusting power (through chain torque) and compensates for your weakest leg, therefore insuring a smooth progression.

With the console and throttle you have complete control on the electric assist and self generating functions.

The battery is an important element for the autonomy and the weight of the bicycle. It is for this reason that Bionx utilizes NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) and  Li-Mn (Lithium- Manganese) batteries, each offering their own strengths an advantages. The battery makes it possible to have an excellent autonomy without adding too much weight to the bicycle.

Ni-Mh Advantages: - Good energetic density (60-80 Wh/kg) - strong  - safe  - flexible

Li-Mn Advantages: - Very high energetic density (100-200 Wh/kg) - Lighter than the Ni-Mh

In addition to the battery cells, the BionX battery also includes electronic compoments that allow it to communicate with the other BionX parts (motor and comand console). 

ASSISTANCE
Bionx is ideal for riders that want to ride longer and keep up with the pack or those that want help up hills and against the wind. Four assistance levels amplify the cyclist’effort by 25%, 50%, 100% or 300%, allowing the cyclist to ride faster while giving the same effort (or ride at the same speed with less effort). Each assistance level is proportional to the rider’s effort.

GENERATION
Bionx offers four levels of power generation. Regenerative braking activates when the rear handbrake is used. It is possible to charge the Bionx battery pack by pedaling against motor resistance. Generation mode makes it harder to pedal so its often used when going downhill. Please note that the generative mode does not replace the existing brakes, but considerably increases braking quality, especially on extended downhill runs.

A true hybrid, the Twist has no throttle. It relies on both pedal power and an unobtrusive, yet sturdy 300-watt motor to set you on your way. If you don't pedal, there's no power and that's just the way Giant (one of the world's, ahem, giant bike makers) thinks it ought to be. And having built a 125,000-square-foot factory dedicated solely to developing and manufacturing its own pedal-assist bikes, the company's commitment to the technology cannot be denied.

Owing to the company's manufacturing expertise, the fit and finish on the Twist's aluminum frame is impressive. And the all-important riding experience is incredibly smooth especially with the internal 7-speed gearing. Older versions of this technology skewed a bit towards the herky-jerky because the motor wasn't smart enough to modulate the power input — but now that has changed. Nestled neatly within a polycarbonate case in front of the rear wheel is Giant's I2 Driver, the brains of this outfit. It monitors and modulates the motor's output in concert with a rider's pedal input to provide a steady, consistent ride. The pedal-assist drive system has three modes or power-assist settings — Economy, Normal and Sport — which deliver an increasing amount of power and diminish a rider's effort as you move from the Econ setting up to Sport
